Questions people ask before they run the numbers

Does this calculator use 2026 federal brackets?

Yes. The estimate uses the 2026 federal bracket schedule, standard deductions, and FICA thresholds listed in the build brief.

Why is my paycheck different from my salary divided by 26?

Your net pay can change because federal withholding, state tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any deductions come out before the money hits your bank account.

How are pre-tax deductions handled?

Pre-tax items reduce your take-home pay right away. If you mark them as tax-exempt, the calculator also removes them from the taxable wage base before computing federal and state withholding.

What does the Step 2 checkbox do?

It adds an annual federal withholding adjustment for workers with multiple jobs or a working spouse, which helps mimic the extra withholding the W-4 worksheet is trying to capture.
